20 Excellent Uses for Baking Soda

By Jordan Miller;

Many of us are familiar with the term baking soda; whether it was through baking or using it as a deodorizer, it is something that we all came to understand as a common household product.  Also know as sodium bicarbonate, this versatile chemical compound has many uses. This compound has been used for hundreds, if not thousands of years. It is documented that the ancient Egyptians used it in a concoction for cleaning purposes. Along with cleaning, baking soda has many other uses that we can take advantage of. Since it is relatively inexpensive it is a product that most people can benefit from; it's a great alternative to many toxic products on the market today. As such, we encourage everyone to give it a try. Not only will you be doing yourself some good, but you will also be contributing to a healthier world.

Cleaning
  • Baking Soda can be used as a surface scrub. It can safely clean bathtubs, tiles, sinks and even fibreglass surfaces. Adding a little to your sponge goes a long way.
  • It can also be used for cleaning your pots and pans; by adding a few tablespoons to your dish detergent, it can help cut grease and foods left on dishes.
  • Baking soda can also be used as a disinfectant for your cleaning sponge; soak your sponge in 4 tablespoons to one quart of warm water.
  • Looking to polish your silverware? Baking soda is your perfect product; make a past of 3 parts baking soda and one part water and rub onto silver with a clean cloth or sponge.
  • Baking soda can also be used to clean your vinyl shower curtain; sprinkle a little baking soda on a damp sponge and brush away the scum and mold.
  • Finally, you can successfully remove oil and grease stains from your garage floor or driveway; sprinkle baking soda on the spot and scrub with a wet brush.

Personal Care
  • A paste of baking soda and 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide can be use as an alternative to some chemically laden toothpastes.
  • You can neutralize bad breath (not just cover up) by adding a teaspoon of baking soda to half a glass of water; swish, spit and rise - it's that simple.
  • Give yourself a body scrub; mix 3 parts baking soda to one part water; rub it on your skin in a gentle circular motion and then rinse; it is safe enough to do daily.
  • Baking soda can also be used to treat heartburn; adding a teaspoon or so to a glass of water helps alleviate most of the discomfort.
  • Baking soda is excellent for treating insect bites and itchy skin; make a past out of baking soda and water and apply it as a slave on your skin; if skin is itchy, sprinkle a bit on your hand and rub into your skin.
  • A great alternative to deodorant; tap some baking soda under your arms to neutralize odours.

Deodorizing
  • Baking Soda is excellent for deodorizing your refrigerator. place an open box in your fridge to neutralize odours.
  • Sprinkle a little in your trashcan and/or recycle bin to keep the odour at bay.
  • Deodorize your sink and tub drains by pouring half a cup of baking soda down the drain while running warm tap water; this will neutralize acids and odours by keeping your drain fresh ( a good way to dispose of your used refrigerator baking soda).
  • Use it to deodorize your carpets; sprinkle a little bit on your carpet and let sit (the longer the better); once odours are neutralized, vacuum the remaining baking soda up (you'll also deodorize your vacuum cleaner).
  • Baking Soda can be used to deodorize pet items; you may add a little to the bottom of your cat liter or sprinkle some on top. Also, liberally sprinkle baking soda on your pets bedding to neutralize the odours.
  • Neutralize sneaker odour; shake some baking soda in your shoes when you are not using them; let sit and shake them out before using.

Other Uses
  • Baking Soda is excellent for extinguishing fires; baking soda can help in the initial handling of minor electrical or grease fires; for small fires, turn off the gas or electricity ( if possible) and throw baking soda on the flames to smother them (when baking soda is heated it gives off carbon dioxide which helps smother the flames).
  • It can be uses to safely scrub dirt and grime off of fruits and vegetables; sprinkle a little on a sponge, scrub and rinse.

As you can see there are many uses for baking soda (other than baking). These are only a few example of this wonderful product - can you think of anymore? Remember, it is through our choices and thus actions where we can help foster a cleaner and safer world for all.
