Use the "Warming Sock Treatment" to Improve Colds and Circulation

The Warming Sock Treatment is a simple, overnight, hydrotherapy technique that is especially effective in clearing congestion of the upper respiratory tract  and reducing inflammation. Additionally, it has a sedative effect which often encourages a restful night’s sleep. The treatment can also be used as a preventive measure to boost the immune system if you are feeling under the weather, run down, or if everyone around you is getting sick. This treatment is also effective for pain relief and increases the healing response during acute infections.

What You Need

2 pair of socks - 1 cotton and 1 wool (2 pairs of cotton will also work)
Access to cold and hot water
A warm bed


Step 1. Soak the foot part of a pair of cotton socks in cold water and wring them out thoroughly. Place the socks close to the basin or bathtub used in the next step. (Yarrow flower tea could be added to the water for additional circulatory benefit, if desired.)

Step 2. Put your feet into a basin or bathtub of hot water to warm up your feet. Soak them for a few minutes until they are hot and pink. (Note: if this treatment is being used on a small child or infant, it is recommended that you be in the water with them in order to avoid too hot of a temperature. In fact, unless the child's feet are very cold to begin with, It might be better to skip this step all together.)

Step 3. Remove your feet from the hot water and quickly dry them off. Immediately put on the cold wet cotton socks, and then over them, put on a pair of dry wool socks.

Step 4. Go directly to bed and keep the feet covered through the night. It is important that no part of the wet sock is exposed to the air.

Step 5. The socks will be dry in the morning. They can be removed and the process repeated again at night.

When the Warming Sock Treatment procedure is followed correctly, your feet will start warming up within a few minutes of getting covered in bed. If congested, you will usually start to feel relief within 30 minutes. It will often work better than a decongestant or antihistamine to relieve congestion during sleep. In addition, it is not uncommon to see a small child or infant fall to sleep immediately after they are put to bed with the Warming Sock Treatment. After approximately four hours the socks should be totally dry, the feet warm, and the symptoms much improved (if not gone).

How it Works

The dry wool socks provide insulation against the air to prevent drying or warming of the cold, wet socks. As a result, your body has to work to both warm and dry your feet. As the body warms your cold feet, more circulation is directed to the lower extremities, and as a result your whole body receives more circulation.


The Warming Sock Treatment is best repeated for three nights in a row. It is safe, and supportive, to use nightly.

Putting on cold socks and sleeping in them might not sound very comforting, but this traditional healing method has been known to have miraculous benefits. There are many home remedies such as this that we can use to improve symptoms naturally. However, what works for others, might not necessarily work for us.   3. Never heard of this, but may try it. When one of my kids has a persistent cough I put a thick layer of vapo-rub on their feet and then socks over when I put them to bed. Seems to work pretty well.
