Health Benefits of Steam Inhalation

By Kyla Miller, R.H.N.;

Steam inhalation is a method of introducing warm, moist air into the lungs via the nose & throat for therapeutic benefit. Essential oils are often added to provide additional relief. Ancient Egyptians recognized the good therapeutic effects of inhalation therapy through the use of public baths. Steam inhalation has since become a simple and effective home remedy for various health issues.

Respiratory Benefits

Inhaling steam is a great treatment for respiratory complications and is recommended for dealing with common cold, flu, bronchitis, sinusitis, asthma, and allergies. Dry air passages are moistened, and mucus is loosened/eliminated easier by coughing or blowing the nose. The moist air also alleviates difficulty breathing, throat irritation and inflammation.

Natural Expectorant

An expectorant increases the amount of secretions, resulting in clearer secretions and as a result, lubricates the irritated respiratory tract. The inhalation of steam significantly benefits the lungs and throat by acting like an effective natural expectorant. This helps to relax muscles, thereby relieving coughing. Inhaling steam is also necessary for preventing excessive drying of the mucous membranes.

Improved Circulation

When the body’s temperature rises, blood vessels begin to dilate. This encourages blood flow and overall circulation in the body. The increase in circulation can provide relief from headaches and migraines. The rise in temperature can also strengthen the immune system by stimulating the circulation of germ fighting white blood cells.

Reduce Stress

Stress causes the inner layer of the blood vessels to constrict. Steam inhalation triggers the vasodilation of blood vessels. When blood vessels dilate, blood flow is increased, promoting relaxation. Further stress reduction can be achieved by using specific essential oils.

Pore Cleansing & Rejuvenation

As previously mentioned, steam inhalation improves circulation which can also improve the skin’s appearance. Additionally, the topical application of steam can be beneficial. Sebum is the natural oil that lubricates and moisturizes skin. When pores are clogged with sebum and other particles such as dirt and makeup, acne breakouts oftentimes appear.  Steam softens these plugs and opens pores so that sebum can flow naturally and remove impurities. Steam also loosens the dead skin cells on the skin allowing new cells to emerge. The result is a soft, youthful glow.

Essential Oils

Many find that aromatherapy provides more relief than steam alone. To alleviate symptoms, essential oils may be added to the steaming water. These are generally used sparingly, with only 2-3 drops being used at a time.

  • For upper respiratory and sinus congestion: peppermint, and/or eucalyptus
  • For stress headaches: chamomile and/or lavender
  • For relaxation: chamomile, lavender and/or lemongrass
  • For oily skin: chamomile, lemongrass, lavender, rosemary, anise, and/or fennel
  • For dry skin: fennel, rosemary, sea buckthorn, peppermint and/or comfrey

Enjoying Steam Inhalation

If you do not frequent day spas, you may be looking for alternative ways to enjoy steam inhalation other than a steam room or facial. Thankfully, steam inhalation does not have to be complicated or expensive. A common method of inhaling steam is to boil a few cups of filtered water and then pour the steaming water into a large bowl. Essential oils can be added at this point if desired. Next, a towel can be placed over the head, while leaning over the bowl of water, breathing deeply through the nose for approximately 15 minutes. Humidifiers also provide a gentle form of steam inhalation.

Use Caution

Since very hot water is used, there is a burn risk associated with inhaling steam. For this reason, it is typically not recommended as a treatment for young children. Many doctors also advise against steam inhalation for pregnant women or people with high blood pressure and/or heart conditions.

What Causes Breast Cancer And How To Prevent It Happening To You

By Madeline Innocent;

Many women want to know what causes breast cancer. Once they know this, they can take measures to prevent it happening to them. Doctors will never tell you this vital information, partly perhaps because they don't know, partly because they are not allowed to tell you. Few people realise how restricted doctors are in the information they give you.

Various independent research projects site the following as contributing causes for breast cancer. It is obvious that those who are not in the lucrative cancer industry are well aware of what causes breast cancer.

Clothing

Bras tend to restrict lymph flow. Lymph flow is essential in the drainage of waste cells, toxins and debris. When this flow is impeded, then the area becomes unhealthy. Those women who wear bras for longer periods than 12 hours a day are statistically 21 times more at risk of breast cancer. Women who wear bras day and night are five times more likely to develop breast cancer than those who only wear bras during the day.

Massage, Exercise

Breast massage or exercise are great ways to promote the lymph fluid flow. The massage should be gentle kneading, rubbing or squeezing strokes and the result should be pleasurable, just as any massage is. The increased blood flow will be felt as warmth. Breast massage can be helpful for those women who suffer with discomfort during nursing or premenstrually.

Chemicals

The modern world is fraught with chemicals. Many mimic the body's natural hormone estrogen, increasing the amount and interfering with its natural abilities. Common ones are found in deodorants and antiperspirants (which contain aluminum or parabens), detergents, pesticides and many plastic products, including those used as food grade containers. Both aluminum and cadmium have a detrimental effect on estrogen. Smoking introduces cadmium into the body.

All cancer tumours contain a much greater concentration of chemicals, such as pesticides, DDT, PCBs. All cancer treatment should include detoxification of heavy metals and chemicals. Instead, mainstream cancer treatment increases the chemical load dramatically.

Light at Night

Women who work late or all night shifts have 60% greater chance of developing breast cancer. Any long exposure to light at night also increases the risk. Production of melatonin peaks at night. Melatonin regulates the production of estrogen. Exposure to light interrupts this production. Instead it stimulates the production of extra estrogen. Unnaturally high levels of this hormone promote breast cancer.

Diet and the pH Factor

Women who regularly eat animal protein and processed foods have an increased risk of breast cancer. All such food makes the human body acidic, leaving it wide open to disease. This is aside from the modern farming practices of feeding farm animals with synthetic hormones, perpetual antibiotics and GM food, all of which have serious consequences on the end consumer.

An acidic body is deficient in oxygen which makes it prone to cancer.

An interesting former truck driver, Jim Kelmun, has cured 185 terminally ill cancer patients out of the 200 who have consulted him. His cure came from a women who survived breast cancer when her five sisters died from it. She enjoyed sipping maple syrup and baking soda. And this has been 'Dr Jim's' remedy.

His recipe is to mix one part baking soda with three parts natural maple syrup. Mix well and heat for 5 mins. Take one teaspoon daily.

It's the baking soda that is the active ingredient here, not the maple syrup.

Dr Simoncini is an Italian oncologist who cures cancer patients by injecting a solution of baking soda into the blood supply feeding the tumour. This alkalises the tumours, increasing oxygen supply, causing the tumour to disappear.

Injury

Injury to the soft breast tissue can cause breast cancer. This can come from a blow or hard knock. This may be one of the reasons why mammograms are now known to be the cause of the condition they are meant to prevent. Trauma induced breast cancer is not always systemic.

Emotional Causes of Breast Cancer

Dr Hamer, an open minded German doctor discovered the emotional causes of cancer after he developed testicular cancer following his son's murder. His extensive work led him to understand what causes breast cancer. Depending on the side affected, it was a deep emotional scarring from relationships with either the mother or the partner.

Cancer is generally not caused by any single cause, such as indicated above. Usually there are multiple causes. But the emotional trigger maybe one of the most damaging. The causative factor is generally around five years prior to the diagnosis.

Prevention

Some of the preventative factors are easy to implement - such as diet, wearing loose clothing at home and at night, minimising toxic exposure, regular detoxing measures, regular exercise and massage, etc.

But it takes more than such measures to undo the deep emotional scars so common in human relationships. Ongoing and intense emotional stress, anxiety, fear and anger all acidify the body.

The best way to tackle these is to use an energy based natural system of health care. Homeopathy is probably second to none in its ability to cure these debilitating problems. This should always be approached with the help of a professional homeopath.

Probably all natural health practitioners are aware of what causes breast cancer. You only have to ask.

What to Do If Your Child Has a Fever

Dr. Shannon Weeks;

I recently came across an article(i) on a very popular health site and was grabbed by the opening paragraph- "Fevers, while not typically dangerous in their own right, can make children uncomfortable. If you have a child with a fever -- whether it's because of an illness or is a normal response to vaccination -- you may wish to give antipyretic, or fever-reducing, medication".

This is the last thing you want to do for a child that is ill and can in fact both prolong the illness and actually cause more harm. The fact that there is little to no evidence that Tylenol/Advil therapy contributes to health has not stopped marketers, and sadly, most doctors from continuing to give patents this bad advice. What exactly is a fever? Simply put, fever is the body treating itself with heat. What happens during a fever? An infective agent (bacteria, virus etc.) is engulfed by a part of your immune system known as a macrophage. A series of chemical reactions take place that causes the thermostat (set-point) of your body to turn down. The body perceives its normal temperature too low and begins to generate more heat by shivering, and conserving heat by constricting the blood vessels, which limits blood flow to the skin and by shutting down the sweating mechanism. This is what causes chills. The immune system also releases chemicals that provoke sleep to help preserve energy for fighting against the infecting germs. At the same time chemicals are released that promote the breakdown in muscle tissue, which increases the body's amino acid supply, the raw materials it uses for defense, repair and energy. This is why muscle aches are common are common with fevers and chills. Excess amino acids also suppress the appetite. This is important because the digestive system shuts down when the temperature goes above 99.5°F. If food is eaten during a fever it will strain the system by not being properly digested, and will add to the toxic load of the body, inhibiting its ability to deal with the cause of the fever.

When the body temperature is elevated white blood cell production, motility, and killing ability is enhanced and antibody production is increased up to 20 times. While the fever is cranking up the body's defenses, it is also providing an inhospitable environment for the germs. At a temperature of around 104°F most bacteria and viruses are killed. Before the availability of antibiotics, syphilis was treated by infecting the patient with malaria, inducing a high fever and leading to a cure.

The ideal temperature for a fever is between102-103°F for fighting infectious disease. 104-107°F is considered the point where dehydration becomes a serious concern and fevers above 107°F as frankly dangerous. Most harm associated with high fevers is usually due to dehydration rather than the fever itself. The concern should be more directed towards the cause of the fever rather than the fever itself. Serious conditions such as meningitis can cause a high fever, but the treatment should be directed towards the meningitis, not the fever.

What about the most common fear for parents- febrile seizures? All the medical research I have found has debunked the two most commonly held misconceptions about high fever in children: that it can result in dangerous seizures, and that fevers from infection must be controlled before they reach a certain point, (usually I06°F), to prevent seizures and brain damage. Febrile seizures tend to occur early in the fever process, rather than after fevers have mounted, and a small percentage of children simply seem to be prone to them; administering fever-reducing medicine does not stave off their recurrence. Most febrile seizures are the result of imbalanced electrolytes due to dehydration from diarrhea, vomiting and increased perspiration. Good management in the form of limiting food and maintaining fluids and electrolytes will prevent most fevers from progressing to more critical stages. And while it is true that fevers over I06°F are potentially damaging, such high temperatures are virtually always the result of heat stroke or brain injury, not infection, and so fears of a cold or flu causing a fever to rise to this level are groundless.

What happens when you give a fever reducer such as Tylenol? The entire metabolic process is stopped in its tracks stops and now you still have an infection, but without any natural defenses. The potentially infectious person, instead of staying in bed because they feel sick, feels well enough to go to work or school exposing their colleagues to the same illness. The maker of Tylenol (and those who manufacture other fever-reducing products) have successfully convinced the public that something absolutely must be done to bring down all fevers in young children. According to a recent article:

"Keeping in mind that bringing fever down by using medication possibly postpones recovery, increases the probability of a secondary infection, deprives one of clues as to the need for further examination or for changes in the therapeutic approach, and may provoke widespread side effects, physicians should treat feverish patients only when the expected benefits outweigh the possible risks." (i)

Anti-fever medications have been marketed for use in children for decades, with drug companies spending $50 million a year on heart-tugging ads in parenting magazines and elsewhere. Still, it has long been acknowledged there is little or no data from studies in the very young to show the medicines are safe and work. Worse, some studies suggest the medicines are no better than dummy pills in treating cold and cough symptoms in young children.

To sum up:

1. Fever is the cure, not the sickness.

2. Leave the fever alone unless it is threatening to go to dangerous levels

3. Fast the febrile patient and slowly resume feeding only when you recover your natural hunger and the temperature is back below 99.5°F

4. 102-103°F is considered optimal for infection fighting.

5. Leave the sweating patient alone- sweating is the body's own mechanism for lowering temperature, so don't interfere with it.(ii)

What Causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome And How You Can Treat It Successfully?

By Madeline Innocent;

Many people suffer with digestive issues of one sort or another. What causes irritable bowel syndrome or other digestive disorders? What can you do to cure it completely?

There is no medical solution to this troublesome problem, because they fail to see what the cause it. Medically, the symptoms can only be managed.

The common symptoms of ibs include bloating, pain and/or abdominal cramps, alternating constipation and diarrhoea, backache, nausea, indigestion, weariness, mucus in the stool. Around a quarter of people suffer with this problem, and women are more likely to have it than men.

The large intestines in most affected area.

There are various factors which I believe to be the cause of this condition.

1. Stress
, such as is so common in our so called civilised world, is a major cause of any digestive disorder.

2. Antibiotics kill off the essential gut flora necessary for complete digestion. While probiotics can help address this, it is far healthier to look for alternatives to these meddlesome drugs.

3. Diet is critical to the health of your gut. Meat tends to rot in your intestines, creating all manner of problems. A diet devoid of meat, or at least low in it, will contribute to a much healthier digestive system. Dairy products are not easily digested. Processed food is alien to your natural ability to digest and absorb food.

4. Unresolved genetic predisposition can be the cause. When people have a problem which is unresolved at an energetic level, it can be passed down to subsequent generations.

Once you open up your mind to common lifestyles of today, it is easy to see what causes irritable bowel syndrome - it's our way of life that is so far from the way we evolved. Perhaps it should be surprising that so few are affected.

The health of your gut is critical to your overall health. If you have ibs, then you will also have compromised general health. Overall health can only occur when your digestive system is working as it should. If the food is not being digested, lack necessary nutrients, or is toxic, your health must suffer.

Let's look at how you can improve your gut health on all four fronts.

Stress maybe common in our world today, but it doesn't have to be. Stress is caused by an inner imbalance. By getting good homeopathic health care, you can drastically reduce the stress you suffer with, even though the circumstances have not changed. Instead, you have changed your perspective, leaving stress behind for the useless emotion it truly is.

Homeopathic treatment has no need for antibiotics, because each well prescribed remedy deals with the cause of the problem, obviating the need for your body to allow a population explosion of bacteria.

When you eat a diet rich in natural fibre, from real food, your intestines can quickly digest and utilise it, without any problem or symptoms. Real food is that which is not laced with chemicals whether in the form of agricultural sprays, GM or processing procedures.

Homeopathic treatment is perhaps the only form of treatment of any sort, whether natural or not, that can finally draw a line under a genetic predisposition to any health problem. This makes it an ideal treatment to have prior to having children.

Now you know what causes irritable bowel syndrome, you can take control of your life and finally let it go. Don't settle for managing your health issues, when you can free yourself of them completely.

4 Strategies for Creating Positive Thinking

By Ryan Rivera;

Upbringing and genetics are key factors in shaping your mental health. Some people manage to overcome the stresses of life, while others find that stress starts to grate at them until eventually they develop serious mental health problems.

It takes a lot of work to overcome stress and improve your mental health. You'll need therapy, you'll need lifestyle changes – you'll need to drastically change who you are and how you respond to various situations. But above all else, you need to have a positive mindset.

That's because negative thinking breeds an attitude that often validates the way you feel. For example, if you feel stressed and anxious, and you see the world through negative lenses, then the world looks like a more dangerous and uninviting place, which creates more stress and anxiety.

Learning to Think Positively

Creating a positive mindset is a crucial tool for coping with stress and overcoming any mental health issues you have. Creating that mindset though isn't easy – your entire life has given you the mindset you have, and only by committing to changing it can you hope to turn negativity into positivity. Here are several tools that you can commit to in order to create a positive mindset.

1. False Positivity
– Your first step, and one that you should start today, is to simply pretend to be positive. Every day, act like a person that is a positive thinker, even if it doesn't come naturally. Doing so will let you practice what positivity feels like and acts like so it will become more natural. In addition, there is evidence that when you pretend to act a certain way, your mind tries to compensate by changing the way you think to match your actions.

2. Positive Journaling – When you view the world through a negative lens, it's easy to start to see negative things while ignoring the positives. You need to re-train yourself to see positive things around you and experience positivity during the day. The best way to do this is with positivity journaling. Every night you sit down and write out 10 to 20 specific, positive things that happened during the day. You make it a goal to do this every night, until eventually during the day you start to notice positive things that you can then write in your journal.

3. Surrounding Yourself With Positivity – You'll also need to change what you do and who you spend time with. Both positivity and negativity are affected by what's around you. If you hang out with negative people, go to negative places, and do negative things, you're going to feel more negative. You may have to change who you spend time with and what you do together, but it's important for creating positivity.

4. Exercise and Stay Active – Finally make sure that you're still outdoors and remaining as active as possible. There is a connection between the mind and body. If your body has too much excess energy, you're going to feel negative and downtrodden. If your body is healthy and energized, you're going to feel more positive.

Positivity really is something you can create. Life may have caused you to feel cynical or negative, but if you're willing to commit to changing your mindset it really can be changed. Positivity isn't going to cure anxiety, stress, or other mental health issues on its own, but it will go a long way towards making sure that the changes you make to your life and the help you seek out become far more likely to affect you, so that you can eventually live a higher quality of life.

Your question: How do you stay positive? (post your comments below)

Top Cancer Feeding And Preventing Foods

By Carol Chuang;

Cancer is a disease that was rarely heard of 200 years ago. Yet with the advance of medicine in the last century, we are experiencing a cancer epidemic in modern societies. What has gone wrong?

The sad news is that cancer, by and large, is a man-made disease, the result of veering too far away from the healthy lifestyles of our ancient ancestors. While avoiding health-sustaining diets and activities, we now embrace a highly unnatural lifestyle and continue to douse our environment and food sources with toxic chemicals. We have shunned our native, whole food cuisine for highly processed fare, engaged in very little physical activity, and led stressful lives. No wonder we are getting sick!

The reality is that you have the power to change all that. By adopting some natural prevention strategies, you can substantially reduce your cancer risk. Diet is clearly the most important factor that impacts your health, but before going into what foods are good for you, you need to know what you should not put in your mouth. You must first stop eating foods that give you poor health or promote cancer growth.

Top 4 Cancer-Feeding Foods

Needless to say, processed foods, fast foods, and soft drinks do NOT belong to a cancer-preventive diet! Apart from these, you should also avoid the following cancer-feeding foods:

1. Sugar

This includes all forms of sugar, be it natural or processed. Sugar has no redeeming value at all. The minuscule nutrients present in natural sugars are not enough to overcome the negative effects of sugar. Eating sugar leads to a rise in blood glucose and insulin, and persistently high insulin is a universal mechanism for chronic disease. It kicks up inflammation and it kicks up free radicals associated with cell damage.

All of us carry around microscopic cancer cell clusters in our bodies at all times. But when we are in good health, eat right and have a healthful lifestyle, they remain suppressed. Sugar is the number one preferred fuel for cancer cells. The more you consume it, the faster they grow.

Beware that all complex carbohydrates eventually break down to simple sugars. If you eat too much, resulting in a constant elevation of insulin, the health effect is still negative. Therefore, even whole grains which are supposed to be nutritious cannot be over consumed. The same applies to fruits, which are mainly fructose and glucose. Most nutrients in fruits can be found in vegetables that contain substantially less sugar.

2. Factory-farmed meats

Animals reared in confined animal feeding operations are given antibiotics, growth hormones, and other veterinary drugs that get stored in their tissues. Cows that are fed a diet of corn (not their natural diet) result in higher E. Coli growth in their stomachs, not to mention that the corn they eat are most likely genetically modified.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the detrimental impact of (factory-farmed) red meats on your health, especially in terms of feeding cancer. What's worse is when you cook the meats over high heat, it creates heterocyclic amines, which further adds to its carcinogenic effect. That's why having a piece of charbroiled, factory-farmed steak or hamburger is definitely not your idea of a healthy meal!

On the other hand, organically-raised, grass-fed meats are totally healthy and beneficial to your health. They are like two different species in terms of their nutritional content. One is health-harming and one is healthful.

3. Bad fats

Fats are essential for your well-being. Every cell membrane in the body is made out of fat, as is your brain. Bad fats in the diet are a major contributor to ill health and cancer. On the list of fats to eliminate are:

-Fats from factory-farmed animals
-Partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated fats
-Trans fats

Healthy fats of particular importance for cancer prevention are omega-3 and omega-9. Omega-3 is abundantly found in fatty fish, grass-fed meats, and flaxseeds. Omega-9 is found in olive oil, avocados, almonds, macadamias, cashews, pistachios, and pecans.

4. Xenoestrogens (chemicals that mimic estrogen)

Any item that contains xenoestrogens promotes cancer. Unfortunately, in this day and age, the list is rather long. First and foremost are foods contaminated with estrogen-mimicking chemicals. They include hormones in factory-farmed meats, pesticides sprayed on vegetables and fruits, canned foods with BPA linings, and foods packed in plastics that contain BPA.

Then there are environmental toxins such as those found in personal care products and household cleaners. With personal care products, avoid those that contain parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulphate, petrolatum, mineral oil, and artificial colors. With household cleaners, switch to those that are natural, biodegradable, and environmentally-friendly.

Top 4 Anti-Cancer Foods

The reason why food can have such a powerful influence on serious diseases such as cancer is due to its impact on a biological process called angiogenesis - the process your body uses to build blood vessels. Cancerous cells, like all other cells in your body, cannot thrive without the oxygen and nutrients supplied by your blood vessels. Excess angiogenesis promotes cancer.

Our ancestors intuitively understood that nature has laced a large number of foods that naturally inhibit angiogenesis, rendering them natural "anti-cancer medicines". Simply by consuming these foods, you can boost your body's defense system and prevent blood vessels from forming and feeding the microscopic cancer cells that exist in your body at any given time.

1. Plant foods

Plants are packed full of flavonoids (antioxidants), vitamins, and minerals that are crucial to your health. They also have numerous phytochemicals (plant chemicals) that are like natural medicines. Each plant has some anti-cancer properties but some are more potent than others.

Brassica vegetables, also known as cruciferous vegetables standout as they have the most natural cancer-fighting substances - indole-3-carbinol (I3C), calcium D-glucarate, and sulforaphane. Not only do they help prevent the growth of breast, cervical, colon, prostate, and a variety of other cancers, many studies show that they have resulted in dramatic regression of tumor growth.

This family of cruciferous vegetables includes:

Arugula (rocket)
Bok choy
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Chinese broccoli (gai-lan)
Chinese cabbage (Napa cabbage)
Collard greens
Daikon radish
Horseradish
Kale
Radish
Kohlrabi
Maca
Mizuna
Mustard greens
Rapini (broccoli rabe)
Rutabaga
Tatsoi
Turnip
Virginia pepperweed
Wasabi
Watercress

To reap the cancer-preventing benefits of cruciferous vegetables, you need to eat at least five servings per week. You want to make sure the vegetables are fresh and ideally locally grown and organic. Stir frying or steaming them retains the maximum amount of nutrients. Boiling destroys most of the nutrients.

Beware that cruciferous vegetables also contain goitrogens. When consumed raw in sufficient amounts, they can inhibit thyroid function and make it more difficult to absorb iodine. However, cooking them will destroy most of the goitrogens.

Plant foods that contain carotenoids and lycopene are also powerful anti-cancer foods. Carotenoids are the compounds that give your vegetables the red, orange, and yellow colors. Lycopene is the compound that gives tomatoes their red color.

2. Curcumin

Curcumin is the principal curcuminoid of the popular Indian spice turmeric, which is a member of the ginger family. It has a distinct bright yellow color and is a primary spice in Indian curry. It is also a principle spice in Ayurveda, India's ancient holistic health system.

Much research has been done on curcumin's power to modulate genetic activity and expression, both by destroying cancer cells and by promoting healthy cell function. Curcumin enhances the body's antioxidant system and is a potent free radical scavenger. This may be the reason why cancers of the breast, colon, lung, and prostate, common cancers in America, are much less prevalent in India.

Turmeric has been used in large quantities as a condiment for thousands of years with no adverse reactions. Studies show that curcumin is not toxic to humans up to 8,000 mg daily. Average intake in the Indian population is around 200 mg a day. If you are looking for a curcumin supplement, make sure it is organic, contains no fillers, and is in a bioavailable form for enhanced absorption.

3. Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds are very high in lignans which are capable of inhibiting the growth of estrogen-related cancers in about a dozen different ways, including the exact same mechanism as the anti-cancer drug Tamoxifen and Arimidex. Lignans are also powerful antioxidants that scavenge free radicals associated with cell damage. When eaten, the lignans are activated by bacteria in the intestine. Lignans, however, are not present in flaxseed oil, only in the fiber portion of flaxseed.

Flaxseeds are very high in alpha linolenic acid (ALA), a precursor to omega-3. That's why they go rancid extremely quickly, so be sure to store them in the refrigerator. They also need to be lightly ground to remove their hard hulls before eating, otherwise, they will be passed whole through your system. Grind them fresh in batches of 2-3 tablespoons in a coffee or spice grinder before adding them to your foods.

4. Vitamin D

In the last 10 years, there has been a huge body of research evidence showing that this sunshine vitamin is an important factor in cancer prevention. Not only does it activates the immune system to work against rogue cells, it can also adjust almost everything in the cancer cell, from switching genes on and off, reduce cell division, to even return a cancer cell to a normal and healthy state.

Most people seldom expose their bare skin (without sunscreen protection) to natural sunlight on a regular basis owing to skin cancer concerns. As a result, studies find that majority of Americans are vitamin D deficient. The only way to know if you have enough D is through a blood test. For healthy people, you want to be in the optimal range of 50-70 ng/ml. If you are being treated for cancer, your D level should be closer to 90-100 ng/ml.

Most people need to take a 5,000 I.U oral vitamin D3 supplement daily to reach the optimal range. Keep in mind that when using a supplement, regular testing becomes even more important to make sure you are staying within the therapeutic range.

Lifestyle Factors

Aside from diet, lifestyle factors also have a huge impact on chronic diseases and cancer.

1. Stress

Research shows that norepinephrine, a hormone produced during periods of stress, can stimulate tumor cells to produce compounds that break down the tissues around the tumor cells, allowing the cells to travel to other organs and tissues and form additional tumors, a process called metastasis. In addition, norepinephrine may also stimulate the tumor cells to release a chemical that can help in the growth of blood vessels that feed cancer cells.

Hence, nourishing your emotional health is an important cancer prevention strategy. Optimal health involves addressing and resolving your emotional traumas as quickly as possible. If you find that you cannot tackle it on your own, seek professional help.

2. Sleep

Persistent disruption in your circadian rhythm, the body's internal clock, accelerates the growth and spread of malignant tumors. Revise your priorities in life so that you are able to sleep 7-8 hours nightly, preferably from 10-11 pm till 6-7 am. Make sure your room is completely dark and keep the temperature below 70 degrees.

3. Exercise

Exercise lowers your risk of cancer by reducing elevated insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells. What's more, exercise improves the circulation of immune cells in your blood. Your immune system is your first line of defense against everything from minor illnesses like a cold to devastating, life-threatening diseases like cancer.
